Pneumococcal Vaccination

Below you will find the groups that will receive subsidies for the various vaccines.

The 13-valent conjugated pneumococcal vaccine

In connection with the entry into force of a free vaccination program with the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine on April 22, 2020, the National Board of Health has begun to re-evaluate which groups should continue to have a conditional grant for the 13-valent vaccine. Until this assessment is completed, the following groups may continue to receive grants.


People with:

  • Performed/planned splenectomy, organ transplant or cochlear implantation
  • Lack of spleen function (eg after radiation)
  • Liquorlækage
  • Previously invasive pneumococcal disease
  • Immunosuppression (eg, HIV infection or lymphoma)
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) over 65 or at FEV1 of less than 40% of the expected
  • Heart failure (heart failure) over 65 years
  • Chronic heart disease over the age of 65 (excluding people with hypertension)
  • Diabetes mellitus over 65 years
  • Chronic kidney disease over 65 years
  • Chronic liver disease over 65 years
  • Asthma over 65 years
  • Chronic bronchitis over 65 years.


People under 18 with:

  • Cyanotic heart disease
  • Heart failure
  • Palliative surgery for heart disease
  • Hemodynamically significant residue after cardiac surgery
  • Chronic lung disease (eg cystic fibrosis)
  • Hypodynamic respiratory insufficiency
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Immune defects, exclusive agammaglobulinemia, and SCID.


The vaccine is also offered free of charge to all children as part of the Danish child vaccination program.


The 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine

On April 22, 2020, a free vaccination program with the 23-valent vaccine came into effect, therefore, this vaccine will no longer be subsidized with the exception of a single group:

  • People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with FEV1 of less than 40% of expected.
